Fall 2013 Mineral Range Railroad, Humboldt, MI

This past Sunday, November 10th, members of REAC visited the Mineral Range Railroad in Humboldt, MI, a small community about half an hour west of Marquette.

The Mineral Range Railroad is a small short-line railroad operated by Clint Jones and currently services a small explosives company and scrap metal yard. However, by late next summer, it will also be serving the Humboldt Mill, where the copper and nickel ore from the Eagle Mine (operated by Lundin Mining) will be processed and shipped out by rail to be further refined in Canada.

Guided by Craig Krause, a local contractor who is now the Chief Engineer for the Mineral Range, the group was shown the Humboldt Junction where the Mineral Range connects into the CN line before shooting off into the woods towards Ishpeming. Afterwards, we were shown a wooden bridge and taught how to measure for rot and how to replace wooden supports with steel beams. Finally, we made our way to the M-95 grade crossing and learned about the construction process as well as some personal insight from Craig himself. To finish off the trip, we swung by the Humboldt Mill to grab a few pictures of the process.

The track construction is still an ongoing progress and has yet to be built from M-95 into the mill yard. There will be future trips to the site once the construction is complete, so check back for any further updates!

Fall Field trip!

This Sunday, November 10th, we will be visiting the Mineral Range in Humboldt, MI. We will be leaving Lot 24 at 8am and arriving in Humboldt around 9:30 or 10 to begin the tour. We will see the crossing, junction, bridgework, and track bed leading up to the mill. If possible, we will also be having a look at their locomotive used in their current switching operations.

At 1pm we will possibly be visiting the LS&I for a site tour of their repair shop, ore dock, and the Empire Mine. I will keep you posted on the status of this. Otherwise we will be heading back to campus and should be home by mid-afternoon.

Below is the sign-up sheet. Please sign up as soon as possible so I can let the tour guide know how many are showing up.

Also, we will stopping for lunch on the way home (or in between tours if that works out) so bring some money. Additionally, dress warm. There is snow in Humboldt. Wear steel toe boots if you have them. PPE will be provided.
