Fall 2013 Mineral Range Railroad, Humboldt, MI

This past Sunday, November 10th, members of REAC visited the Mineral Range Railroad in Humboldt, MI, a small community about half an hour west of Marquette.

The Mineral Range Railroad is a small short-line railroad operated by Clint Jones and currently services a small explosives company and scrap metal yard. However, by late next summer, it will also be serving the Humboldt Mill, where the copper and nickel ore from the Eagle Mine (operated by Lundin Mining) will be processed and shipped out by rail to be further refined in Canada.

Guided by Craig Krause, a local contractor who is now the Chief Engineer for the Mineral Range, the group was shown the Humboldt Junction where the Mineral Range connects into the CN line before shooting off into the woods towards Ishpeming. Afterwards, we were shown a wooden bridge and taught how to measure for rot and how to replace wooden supports with steel beams. Finally, we made our way to the M-95 grade crossing and learned about the construction process as well as some personal insight from Craig himself. To finish off the trip, we swung by the Humboldt Mill to grab a few pictures of the process.

The track construction is still an ongoing progress and has yet to be built from M-95 into the mill yard. There will be future trips to the site once the construction is complete, so check back for any further updates!

Volunteering with Quincy Mine and Hoist

On Saturday, October 12th, REAC adviser Dave Nelson and student members of met up with the Quincy Mine and Hoist volunteer Ron Whiton and others to lay about 100 feet of track next to the old Quincy Mine round house. With nothing but muscles, spike mauls, claw bars, shovels, and some good story telling, the group was able to get the track all spiked and lined before 1pm. Cardboard Boat Race - Fall 2013

This year REAC tried a new approach to get the word out about the club. During the Fall 2013 Homecoming, a cardboard boat was made to compete in the Cardboard Boat Race on the Portage by Chutes and Ladders.
It was made into a train.
Although it did not win first place, everyone involved with the process had smiles on their faces
(Left side, front to back) Ashley Pedrotte, Christopher Blessing, Tanja Mattonen, Nicholas Lanoue
(Right side, front to back) Nicole Wehner, Michael Bartkowiak, Brian Haupt, Kate
We plan on doing this again in the future for club member bonding and to spread the word about REAC
